The secret gallery
Gerrard Street may be considered the northern edge of campus, but it’s not a firm dividing line when it comes to resources available to students. A free public gallery called Arcturus is located on the same side of the street as the Ryerson Theatre School and Neill-Wycik Co-op, and the artist-in-residence is inviting the Ryerson community to explore this public art space.
Deborah Harris says the gallery is open to students of various disciplines as a place to not only contemplate but also to create. Theatre students used paintings from a recent exhibition as a way of exploring posture and gesture.
Gallery Arcturus features rotating exhibitions from its permanent collection as well as works created in the space itself. Harris says this process is quite rare -- artists come to the gallery to work with a particular theme and create paintings that will hang on site when completed.
There are also regular collage workshops that students can join -- or, she says, “they can phone the gallery and organize a workshop for a class or student group. Twelve is a good number of attendants.”
Ryerson photography students are also urged to enquire about the gallery’s upcoming participation in the city-wide Contact exhibitions.
Gallery Arcturus is located at a few steps from Church St. at 80 Gerrard St. E.
