And the nominees are...

On March 18, Sports and Recreation announced the finalists for the 2008- 2009 Interuniversity Sport Awards.

Male Rookie of the Year

Josh Budd, a men's basketball player in geographic analysis, played an average of 28 minutes per game this year as a starter.

Vince D'Elia, in business management, was one of 13 recruits added to the men's soccer team this year and named a second-team Ontario University Athletics all-star.

Luka Milosevic, biomedical engineering, was part of the OUA all-rookie team.

EYE pick: D'Elia missed half of the games this season because of an injury but still managed to tie for leading the team in scoring.

Female Rookie of the Year

Madelaine Jullian, a theatre performance student and figure skater, tore up the ice this year, winning silver at the provincial championships.

The women's volleyball team's performance was boosted by Leah Saar.

The social work student led the squad in kills this season.

Angela Tilk, international economics and finance, helped guide the women's basketball team to the second round of the playoffs with her rebounding skills.

EYE pick: Saar, who was a member of the Ontario U-18 team last summer, will prove to be a key player in future seasons.

Male Athlete of the Year

Boris Bakovic, third-year business management, led the province in field goals and free throws, and was second in rebounding.

Chris McLaughlin, third-year retail management, was a team leader in points and kills this season.

Matt Buie, fourth-year architecture, made Ryerson rowing history when he won gold with Philippe Roy in heavyweight doubles this season. He also won silver at the provincial championships.

EYE pick: It's a close race between Buie and Bakovic, but the men's basketball player led Canada in scoring this season.

Female Athlete of the Year

Tabitha Copping, fourth-year social work, helped put Ryerson figure skating on the map this season, winning two silvers at the OUA championship. Jenny Hobbs, second-year geographic analysis, was key in rebounding and scoring for the women's basketball team this season.

Andrea Raso, second-year business management, moved from striker to midfielder this year but still named to the OUA all-star first team.

EYE pick: Raso made history this year when she was named Ryerson's first ever female All-Canadian by Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
