The Eyeopener guide to the playoffs
Three Rams teams made it into the playoffs. Here’s a recap on how they got there and what to expect in the post-season.
Women’s Basketball
After opening the season with an eight game losing streak, the women’s basketball team has clinched a playoff berth.
The women begin their post-season run on Saturday against Laurentian University. Laurentian has beaten the Rams in both meetings this year and the university is also home to the league’s top scorer, Cassandra Carpenter. However, the Rams have a leading scorer of their own- Lisa Goldring.
Goldring had 25 points and three steals in the win over Ottawa that sent the Rams to the playoffs. The second-year guard doesn’t think the team’s losing droughts this year will affect their play in the post-season.
“I think we’ve proven that we deserve to be here especially after we knocked out Queen’s, who was in fourth place,” she says. “We’ll definitely play better- everyone knows their role now.”
Men’s Basketball
Boris Bakovic’s buzzer-beater last Friday helped propel the men’s basketball team into a playoff spot. With only 6.8 seconds remaining, the leading scorer in the CIS pushed his squad to the win against Laurentian University.
The Rams sealed their post-season position with a win against York University last Saturday. The team has two games remaining, when they meet University of Toronto this weekend for a home-and-home series. The contenders in the OUA East quarterfinals are undecided, because there are still games to play this week. However, it looks like Ryerson is set to play Queen’s University or Toronto.
Men’s Volleyball
The men’s volleyball team finished sixth in the OUA this season and now the Rams are getting ready for post-season play.
This is the fifth consecutive time the team has been in the playoffs as they play their first game of the playoffs against the University of Guelph. The season series is tied, with each squad winning their home game. The Rams are a mix of inexperience and veteran players- with graduating middle Nic Beaver and first-year star Greg McDonald leading their team in kills. Guelph hasn’t been to the post-season since 2004, when they beat Ryerson in the quarter-finals. Beaver hopes that history won’t repeat itself.
“They are a good team within the league, but we are going in with confidence” he says. “We know we can beat them.”
