Stairway fundraising

Some of Ryerson's brightest students aimed high at this year's CN Tower climb for United Way.

Seven members of the Ryerson chapter of the Golden Key Honour Society arrived at Union Station early Sunday morning, ready to conquer the tower. Each participant was required to raise $50 for United Way to participate.

In 2004, more than 10,500 climbers helped raise more than $1 million for United Way agencies across Toronto to assist the elderly, mothers with young children and the homeless.

Michelle Leung, a fourth-year retail management student and Golden Key social events director, aimed to make it to the top of the tower in less than 30 minutes.

"I'm more excited than nervous," Leung said before getting in line for the climb. "It's our first time climbing it ... it's a long way up."

The Golden Key Honour Society invites students whose GPAs have placed them in the top 15 per cent of their program of study.

Truc Nguyen, Ryerson's Golden Key co-president, said she once attempted to climb the Eiffel Tower during a visit to Paris but changed her mind.

Nguyen was pleased that each member raised $50, resulting in a total donation of $500.
